Halloween activities are dripping with superstitious history. Although the holiday appears to be all about dressing up, telling ghost stories, and enjoying candy and other sweet treats, there are many activities we take part in without knowing the rationale and many others from around the world which may just seem downright ridiculous. Most people remain unaware of the various traditions and superstitions followed on the 31st of October; they remain unaware of just how unusual Halloween, with its Celtic roots, can be. Listed below are just a few cherry-picked superstitious reasons why this holiday is so peculiar and wacky...

Chhichhore

Movie Review by Raghav Prabhakaran

‘Chhichhore’ hit the big screen in September 2019 and within days, it took the country by storm. With a cast featuring household actors, namely Sushant Singh Rajput and Shraddha Kapoor, alongside rising stars like Varun Sharma and Naveen Polisshetty, this movie is replete with a unique combination of emotions which primarily sprung from the powerful, joyful and tear-provoking plot.

It opens with a young boy who attempts suicide, surrendering to the pressure that comes with competitive entrance exams. Upon discovering that his son’s fear of being branded a “loser” led to this, Anni (Sushant Singh Rajput) recounts his own experiences as the college loser, hoping this nostalgia trip will help save his teenage son’s life. As the story develops, Anni’s college friends join in one by one, propelling the plot forward with their distinctive recitations.

In totality, the movie is an exploration into the dynamics of the various relationships everyone shares in their lives -- the relationship of a husband and a wife, of parents and their children as well as those relationships of friendship. ‘Chhichhore’ is a tear-jerking, but also hilarious, walk down memory lane. In many ways, it is also a motivational movie, simultaneously inspiring Raghav and the audience to persevere and to give their best every time. It effectively combines a spectrum of emotions with varied relationships to adeptly explore the extraordinary lives of each character – while also spreading the message that it is about the journey, not the destination. Conclusively, ‘Chhichhore’ is a roller-coaster ride, one which not only is extremely enjoyable but also makes you think.

Joker

Movie Review by Akrit Agarwal

DC Comics have always been characterized as dark and emotionally wrought, but the films have somehow failed to cultivate that ideal. Despite being an all-new origin story, watching Joker felt like seeing a comic book come to life. It draws parallels to the acclaimed ‘The Killing Joke’, currently the most widely accepted origin story of the character, as well as Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the same character in ‘The Dark Knight’ wherein it is a visual representation of the quote “all it takes is one bad day.”

If you’ve been following the film, you’d undoubtedly have heard that Joker “comments on and criticizes societal evils” or that it “encourages young men to take to violence.” In my opinion, it does neither. To me, the film is a character study depicting Arthur’s mental transition from a mild, suffering psyche to a vicious, sadistic one.

The audience watches Arthur Fleck – a man already suffering from poverty, a cigarette addiction and mental disorders – get assaulted in the street, get mocked on live television by his idol and discover his mother nearly beat him to death as a child on multiple occasions. After asphyxiating his dying mother in revenge, he finds out that his relationship with Sophie, who he thought was his girlfriend, was merely hallucinated.

The empathy that Arthur evokes is a testament to Joaquin Phoenix’s acting capability as well as Todd Phillips’ skill as a director. When he shoots three businessmen in a subway car, there’s no sense of shock. When he asphyxiates his mother, there’s no sense of anger. When he kills a former colleague with a dull pair of scissors, there’s no sense of horror. Instead, there’s a sense of justice. That is, perhaps, the film’s greatest feat – its ability to portray horrific crimes as reasonable, and even justifiable.

Worth a mention is the mood. You can always sense Arthur’s instability, but you can never tell when he’s about to snap. That created tension for almost every single one of the one hundred- and twenty-two minutes Joker runs for. The unpredictability of Hildur Guðnadóttir’s score only serves to accentuate that, particularly “Call Me Joker” -- its low, rasping theme imperceptibly riding the line between humanity and madness.

With the film featuring yet another depiction of the gruesome murder of Bruce Wayne’s parents as a direct consequence of Arthur’s actions, it would certainly be interesting to see this adaptation of the Joker interact with the Batman. The unbelievable success of this film may persuade Warner Bros. Entertainment to fund a sequel, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

As one of the best representations of the dystopian Batman universe, Joker is worth a watch. Joaquim Phoenix’s acting is virtuosic, to say the least. Todd Phillips’ direction and world-building is artistic. If it’s out of theatres, I urge you to wait to acquire a high-definition copy of the film before you watch it so that you can enjoy the duo’s bravura in HD.

The Haunting of Hill House

TV Show Review by Karthikeya Gautam

In the genre of entertainment that is horror, masterpieces have regularly decorated the screens. One has learned to love what one is scared of among the screams and jumps, truly appreciating the beautiful cinematography accompanying such screen gems. With the likes of “The Exorcist” and “The Shining” has set the bar high for modern movies and TV shows to compete with, it is not wrong to that a piece of entertainment at par with that is seldom to drop. However, this was proven wrong in October 2018, when the new Netflix web series, “The Haunting of Hill House” graced our screens and provided us with a commendable and truly amazing storyline, screenplay, and characters.

The non-linear storyline follows the Crain children and their experiences at Hill House, a mansion where the family moves in order to renovate it and eventually sell it off. Once grown up, a tragedy brings them all together, tying them once again to their past at Hill House. There is a constant interplay between the past and present lives of the five Crain children, depicted by flashbacks to their time at Hill House. This approach to the story is done so smoothly and intricately that not once is any plot hole created, nor any detail missed. However, this may prove to be too much to keep up with for audiences simply looking for a scare and can get confusing if attention wavers. Attention to detail is also crucial, with it being a series requiring multiple watches to truly grasp.

The story in itself is extremely well written, and this is what sets it apart from most modern-day horror films or TV shows. The show does not simply rely on jump scares or heavy music to set the mood of gloom and decay that is embodied by the Hill House but actually draws the audience into the lives of the Crains. The characters are multilayered, complex, and undergo a separate character arc throughout the show. No character is just there to be killed off or fill in gaps – they all have a purpose, individuality, and uniqueness to themselves. This makes the show even scarier, as putting a central character in danger instils the feeling of danger within the viewer as well.

The 10 episodes would keep viewers hooked without a doubt. With brilliant acting performances, smooth storyline, haunting cinematography, and above all the perfect choice given that Halloween is right around the corner, “The Haunting of Hill House” is an apt choice for anyone looking for a series to stick to.

Stalking Jack The Ripper

Book Review by Tanvi Jha

Take a chance to glimpse the cover of this book. Now, I remind you NOT TO JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER.

When I first picked up this book, I did exactly that – I judged it. In the past, I had fallen for many well-summarized book plots at the back of the covers of poorly written novels and I did not want to do the same. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the gorgeously written murder mystery in this book. The story follows Audrey Rose Wadsworth, an ambitious woman living in Victorian London (plot twist?) who is apprenticing under her uncle in forensics in secret from her father. She apprentices alongside her new friend and rival Thomas Cresswell. The story revolves around her overprotective father who is a bigger germaphobe than anyone you know and her doting brother.

As she practices dissection, she becomes involved in a series of murders, whose culprit is named ‘Jack the Ripper.’ While the story may not partake in the actual case of Jack the Ripper, it provides some fascinating historical documents showing how dissection was used as a means of learning about the human anatomy as trivia.

The author of this book Kerri Maniscalco grew up in a “semi-haunted house outside New York City” and we see her love for the Gothic element translate into her writing. She’s unafraid to weave gruesome details of dissection into her story, ensuring that the “horror” of this book is not lost. She uses impressive imagery and uses the misty streets of Victorian London as a stage to portray the cunning Audrey Rose as a Sherlock Holmes. Her character is strong and admirable but not abrasive as some female book characters may appear. Rose’s unconditional love for her family is highlighted throughout. While she is a determined daughter going against her father’s wishes, she remains loving and kind - a multi-faceted woman that is.

Her friendship with Thomas is another element worth addressing. We see that he is a mysterious chap, however, he does not play the irritating ‘mysterious, dark knight’ but rather the Dr Watson. While their friendship starts off rocky, as they solve the Jack the Ripper case, they find common ground and eventually it becomes exciting to watch the two of them in action. Reading this felt like re-reading a new version of Sherlock Holmes’ A Study in Scarlet with an interesting female protagonist and an equally complex male counterpart.

This book is the first of a series that tackles famous Victorian murder mysteries and cases. Having only recently picked up this series from where I left off, I believe it’s worth a try, especially if you’re waiting for a murder mystery that will actually leave you at the edge of your seat. If you want a book that causes you stare blankly at the wall in amazement, I recommend this one to you!

iPhone 11 - Did we really need an update?

Tech Review by Naina Goel

Apple recently launched one of its biggest and most expensive series of smartphones: the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max. Considering the hefty $700 - $1100 price range, the question that almost everyone is mulling over if they should upgrade to a new phone or not? We are living in an era dominated by advancing technology, where every newly released product is only slightly improved than its prior models. Moreover, devices that were launched even 3-4 years ago, such as the iPhone 7, remain fully functional.

To decide whether these phones are worth a switch the new features of the iPhone 11 range needs to be evaluated. Although the Face ID and the lightning port remains unchanged, there are several new features that this series of iPhones offer. In terms of the design, iPhone 11 comes in six splendid colours with two 12-megapixels cameras. Similarly, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max come in four stainless steel and glass designs with an additional third camera. With the new Apple A13 Bionic chipset, the new processor is drastically faster and extremely efficient. However, iPhone X already had an incredibly fast pace of shooting photos and running apps and other phones above the iPhone 7 can easily be kept up to date with assistance from the several iOS software updates. The 11 range promises some tremendous battery improvements with four to five extra hours each day. Finally this range’s most compelling feature - the camera has made huge strides. iPhone now offers the ability to shoot the highest quality videos in any smartphone ever. Moreover, the new ultra-wide camera shoots four times the scene. Finally, the newly introduced night mode allows one to shoot beautiful sharp HD pictures even in low lit scenarios.

All in all, the answer boils down to the device you currently own and if these improvements are worth the investment according to you. Reasonably, older devices like iPhone 6 can be upgraded as due to compatibility issues the iOS software will no longer be updated. If you are someone who takes photography seriously and replies on it, or who has serious demands from their phone’s battery, then the iPhone 11 is perhaps a good update for you. Otherwise, in another few years better technological strides might be made and hence I suggest that iPhone 7 and above users should stay patient as breaking free of the common ‘2-year upgrade cycle’ has its own benefits.

Personification of Death in Pop Culture

Written by Aayush Dayal

As humans, we long to understand the unknown and delve deeper into the black abyss which lies beyond the horizon of our daily comprehension. The yearning for this state of limbo often comes along with trepidation and an overall feeling of antipathy, especially when its concerning any “black abysses”. For the most part, historically, literature has been a manifestation of our greatest fears, nightmares, terrors, horrors, alarms and apprehensions. More so, it is an attempt to fathom the thoughts that haunt us and keep us awake at night than to detest them or even pray to keep them away, for what we comprehend, we are at peace with. In effect, it is the incoherent that disturb us from our rest. And what is our most innate and eternal fear as mere mortals on this Earth – the ultimate reckoning of all our troubles, the natural law by which we all are bound, the same fate which knocks on every door, peasants and lords alike -- is Death...
