Letter to our Founders

A Letter to our Founders

Dear Rajal and Rusheen,

Thank you.

The Pathways Gazette has become a place for us to look at the world from our perspective, to be creative, to have fun with writing, and so much more. It’s the home to our pent-up emotions, a publication that we can share proudly with our friends knowing that it will not only interest them, it will excite them! For many of us, this is the first time we’ve been able to do that with our creative work.

We’re so grateful for the time and effort you spent trying to fit the Gazette perfectly into Pathways life. From coming up with article categories, to figuring out which ones were popular, to restructuring the magazine multiple times you have clearly worked hard to make your publication relevant. You cut through the noise and found work that we can all connect with. We know that this process is unending, but thank you for laying such a strong foundation for us to work with.

Covid and Communism

Covid and Communism

By Kyra Kumar

Marium stirs in her sleep drowsily as sweat runs down her forehead and drips past her neck onto the hard ground. Its 41C and she forces her eyes open to check on the newborn baby nestling his head against her waist. Marium’s eyes brim with tears as she gently brushes the dirt of his cheek and traces her finger along the ribs protruding through his flesh. The plastic sheets above their heads only trap the heat within the thin tin walls under which three other women are crammed together in sleep. Marium gathers the energy to sit up and look outside; she can see the clouds forming and threatening to rain havoc upon the clustered community by once again breaking down their temporary huts and whatever is left of their shattered spirits.

Delhi Impresses Again

Delhi Impresses Again

Story of a Group Chat

By Ameerah Mahajan

On 3rd April 2020, screenshots of a group chat known as "bois locker room" (consisting of boys of ages 17-19 from the Delhi-NCR region) were leaked onto Instagram. The group chat, allegedly created as a platform to let off some steam through general conversation, took a turn for the worse when the topic of discussion shifted from small talk to females and sex.

Several members began sending Instagram posts, screenshots and, in some cases, pornographic images of certain females (all underage). These images were followed by lewd, sexual statements about the physical features of said females. Considering that each was underage, the members' actions were unacceptable.

album review: 3.15.20 childish gambino

By Aayush Dayal

3.15.20 is the fourth studio album released by artist, actor, comedian, writer and director Donald Glover  under the stage name ‘Childish Gambino’. The album from the Gramm-winning artist comes after a four year drought since his previous album ‘Awaken my Love’ was released in 2016, receiving critical acclaim. He exploded into the media with his video of  ‘This is America’ which portrayed racially motivated violence in the United States in 2018 and followed with a few more singles, leaving this album highly anticipated.

Yours Sincerely, Kanan Gill

Letter of recommendation:

Yours sincerely, kanan gill

By Varushka Bhushan

Yours Sincerely is Kanan Gill’s second stand-up special. In the special, he focuses on the goals 15-year-old him had for future Kanan. The aim of going through the letter is to invoke nostalgia and get his audience to introspect; reminiscent of the common theme of adults having a mid-life crisis based on their younger selves’ idea of success. It takes Kanan almost a quarter of his special to get down to the crux and when he does it fails to fulfil its purpose. The writing seems repetitive and stretches jokes too long, to the point where you wonder when the joke will end.

Recreational Drugs

Recreational Drugs: What Happened?

By Raghav Prabhakaran

The first definition of the word ‘drugs’ in the Oxford Dictionary is: an illegal substance that some people smoke, inject, etc. for the physical and mental effect it has. This definition precedes that of its medicinal use in the dictionary. While the word is perceived with a negative connotation today, it is important to note that historically, things were different. It is only in recent times that pop-culture, largely that of America, has created this picture of this range of substances called drugs. While there are undeniable negative effects of these substances that are illegal in most places, it is imperative to understand why they are legal in other places and what they previously meant in society.

Covid and Apple

COVID and Apple: A love-hate relationship

By Rishi Popat

The coronavirus has shut down all of our favorite delis and coffee shops, but it has also impacted industries that strive and depend on us feeding them with an endless flow of cash generated by the products we buy from them, and the services they offer to us.

Apple is a massive firm in one of the aforementioned industries - one that we all know and love (most of us, anyway). Perhaps more importantly, we care about the upcoming iPhone 12, which unfortunately has no announcement date in sight. Instead of the typical September announcement, we anticipate a release and shipping date pushed back to late October or even November.
